HOW THE CONTEST WORKS
All entries must fit into one of the following two themes: “NAUTICAL” OR “VACATION.”
All nautical- or vacation-themed entries will be entered into one of the following eight categories:
  1. Animals/Birds/Fish/Reptiles
  2. Realistic Human Figures or Busts
  3. Caricatures/Characters
  4. Stylized — i.e., Departure From Realism For Artistic Purposes
  5. Relief Carving
  6. Chip Carving
  7. Walking Sticks/Canes
  8. “Other” — Does Not Fit Other Categories
From each of the above eight categories, there will be a FIRST- and a SECOND-place prize. Each of the eight first-place winners will receive $100 CASH, while each of the eight second-place winners will receive a free two-year subscription (new or renewal) to Carving Magazine. ONE GRAND PRIZE WINNER WILL BE SELECTED FROM THE EIGHT FIRST-PLACE WINNERS.

CONTEST GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
  • Free to enter—simply send a photo* of your carving(s), via email, to editors@carvingmagazine.com or postal mail to: All American Crafts Publishing, Carving Magazine Contest, 7 Waterloo Road, Stanhope, NJ 07874
    *PHOTO SPECS: We prefer e-mailed photos, sized 1 to 2mb, roughly 300 dpi at 3” X 4” size; 35 mm prints may also be mailed in; participants may include as many shots of a single item as desired (front, side views, etc.)
  • Entries will be judged based upon creativity, skill, technical difficulty, originality, execution, and overall presentation.
  • Entries accepted until July 15, 2009.
  • Must be 18 years or older to enter.
  • Maximum 3 entries per person.
  • Carvings must be original work by the participant; please make note if it is an instructor-assisted carving.
  • Judges reserve the right to accept or decline an entry for any reason.
  • Judges’ decision is final.
  • Judges reserve the right to move entries to appropriate categories as needed.
  • All carvers give permission to Carving Magazine’s editorial staff to publish photos of any and all entries in their magazine, on their website, and/or in direct mail pieces as they see fit.
  • The top two contestants in each of the eight categories will be asked to send their carving to Carving Magazine’s office in New Jersey for final judging and a professional photo shoot. Carving Magazine will pay basic to-and-from shipping  expenses (per carving up to 50 lb.), and the carvings will be returned to their respective artists.
  • Winners will be announced in Carving Magazine Issue #28, on sale September 22, 2009.
