Issue #21 cover image
This is not an easy "From the Editor" for me to write; however, I am going to get through it.

As many of you know by now, Carving Magazine's founding editor, Marnie Whillock (my sister), passed away on July 2, 2007, after a long battle with breast cancer. Due to her illness, she was unable to finish her work on Issue#20. After her passing, our family's first plan was to complete that issue—it was a total family effort.

Next, a decision had to be made about who was going to take over the editor's position. It was Marnie's wish that her family continue to be involved with the magazine, if possible. She and I discussed this on several occasions, and based on my discussions with Marnie, I made the bittersweet decision to become the editor of Carving Magazine. I was happy for the new opportunity, but sad about how the situation came about.

During my decision-making process, the folks at All American Crafts (Carving Magazine's publisher) invited Marnie's son, Ryan, and me to New Jersey to meet with the staff. The company was fantastic and very supportive during this time.

So, it is now official—I am the new editor of Carving Magazine. (It is still difficult for me to say.) I am Chris Whillock—born, raised, and still living in Faribault, Minnesota. I am the son of Ivan and Mary Whillock, and I am married and the father of three children. I began carving when I was eight years old, and I have been involved in the family business ever since.

My brother and I run a woodcarving tool supply business based out of Owatonna, Minnesota. I do limited commission work, teach many classes, and travel often for carving events. I have a background in advertising and publishing, and have worked for newspapers and printers throughout the years as well.

Now, I'd like to tell you a little bit about Issue #21 of Carving Magazine. We have several awesome projects for you to get started on. We have continued the tradition of focusing on techniques that many of you have commented on, and in this issue, we are introducing two new technique columns: "Drawing for Woodcarvers" and "Sharpening 101." We will still have many of your favorites, but we'll also be trying some new things as well!

I look forward to continuing this wonderful gift that "Marn" gave me, and I promise to work hard and try to make her proud.

Happy Carving!—Chris
