Issue #24 Greetings! We find contributors in a variety of ways… I was at a Kansas City Woodcarving Show last fall and wanted to visit with a carver that I had heard about for years, but never had the chance to meet—Ed Zinger. Not only did I get to do a profile of Ed and his fantastic carvings, I also walked by some show-stopping log Santas that were quite amazing. I chatted with Santa Carver James Barr, and he agreed to do a project for the magazine as well. While surfing the Internet I stumbled upon some woodspirit carvings that really caught my eye. I contacted the artist, Scott Powers, and he agreed to share his techniques for creating these whimsical knotheads. An Internet letter came to me and the writer suggested a story about a great Santa Carver named Paul Green; I had to check him out. In this special holiday issue, we also relied heavily on our regular contributors for colorful projects: Ivan Whillock’s Snowman Relief, Gen Jansen’s Friendly Fawn, Tony Erickson’s Bark House, and Ol’ Don Burgdorf’s Santa Shelf Sitter. We have some informative technique articles for you as well: Understanding Color with Donna Menke, Portrait Carving with Steve Oliver, Choosing the Right Finish with Paul Rolfe, and last, but not least, Ev Ellenwood continues his series on Sharpening. Additional features in this issue include a Personal Angel from Samuel Wilson and a profile of Antler Carver Will Charbonneau. All in all, I think we have something for everyone. Till next time… Happy Carving! Chris Whillock
