![]() About the cover:
The blue jay on the cover is the work of Dennis "Butch" Clark from Bradford, Ohio. A profile of Dennis and his carvings appear on page 54 of this issue. Dennis got the idea for the carving while he was sitting on his back porch watching the birds steal cat food from a bowl that was in his backyard ... hence the name "Backyard Bandit." The entire carving is made from basswood, including the bird, the stump, and even the sunflower seed. The cover photo is the work of Don Selanders, also from Bradford, Ohio.

Issue #25 Greetings! Wow, what a great issue we have in store for you! Putting this edition together made me want to get out the tools and go to work. I love spirit faces. We found a fantastic walking stick carver, Susan Hendrix from Utah, who shares a step-by-step spirit face project with you. Other projects in this issue include Paul Rolfe’s acanthus leaf (pictured below), a fun goblet from Robin Trudel (pictured in left sidebar), and a caricature clock from our very own Ol’ Don Burgdorf (pictured in table of contents at bottom of page).
Carving Magazine is becoming well regarded for its “teaching focus,” and this issue is no different. Learn to carve a realistic eye with Chris Howard, learn elements of landscape carving with Ivan Whillock, and, finally, discover a way to get your V-tools sharp with a great feature from Ev Ellenwood. In fact, Ev has shared a sharpening column in the last five issues, so be sure to keep them handy for future reference. In each issue we try to profile carvers doing some fantastic work, and in this issue, we have features on bird carver Dennis Clark and furniture carver Patrick Damiaens. Regular columnist John Call also profiles a gallery owner, who shares useful information for selling your work. "Ask Joe" is back in a feature article about good beginner projects. If you have a carving question that you’d like to ask our resident expert, be sure to send it in. You may even see it in the pages of a future issue. We hope you enjoy this issue. Till next time…Happy Carving! Chris Whillock < Linden Tree Goblet / Robin Trudel |
