Issue #30

Greetings!

I am thrilled about this jam-packed issue of
Carving Magazine.

We have a variety of carving projects to challenge you: A jewelry box cover (Whillock), "Victor the Viking" (Rhadigan), a "Handmade Fishing Lure" (Lawrence), an "Eager Equestrian" (Burgdorf), and a decorative maple leaf design (Mikulas). We also included a fun caricature dog, "Cooper the K9," and a woodspirit pattern. There should definitely be something for everyone to try.

We have four features that will keep you informed. Learn about the violin scroll (Anderson), wildfowl carving (McNeil), and collecting fishing lures. We also have another installment of Susan Alexander’s “Let’s Talk Carving.”

Carving Magazine always includes technique articles to keep your skills honed. In this issue, learn about using teaching aids, make your own adjustable log cradle (Barr), and carve an "Eight-Step Caricature Face" with Steve Brown.

To round out the fine assortment of carving instruction, we include profiles on Gary Arens and his fabulous dog carving, and "Dick Miraglia: The Carving Scroller."

Just a reminder: If you don’t see your local carving show or club listed in our "Events/Clubs" section, please send us the information. We’d love to have your group featured in those pages.

Also, if you have a unique project idea that you’d like to share with us, drop us a line.

Happy Carving!
Chris

About the cover:
The beautiful loon carving on our cover is the work of Laurie McNeil, the "Loon Lady," from Shakopee, Minnesota. Laurie has been sculpting wood since 1984 and has won numerous awards for her wildfowl carving. Her work has been purchased by collectors from across the country, and a few selected pieces have been made into limited-edition bronzes. A profile of Laurie and her work can be found on page 26 of this issue.
