Hard Felt Sharpening wheels for Sale

Postby Nadsworld » Thu Jan 08, 2009 9:51 am

I have 7 hard felt wheels to sell. These are imported from England, coast me a bit over $20 when the pound was a dollar fifty one.The wheel on my motor has been there since 1992, and since the motor has been ready to burn out for years, am keeping one wheel. I am writing an article for Chip Chats on building a sharpening system, that will equal the KOCH or Supersharp systems...You get a copy. Please note.To properly use this or any other felt wheek, you need a BLOCK of cooling paste. This will run about $18 delivered from a vendor. How well can you sharpen. Read, understand reasons , follow directions and the following holds true.. You may let a novice use your tools, but not sharpen them.. I will let a novice sharpen my tools, but that does not say he/she is free to carve with them. Impossible to screw up unless deliberate..Instructions and HARD felt wheel 24.oo post paid. All joking aside, the majority of you "know" all about felt wheels and sharpening, but ,in reality you don't...Excellent for a club sharpening system...I will be posting on EBay shortly, Thank you for allowing this advertisement..nadcarves@yahoo.com

These are all gone...In fact, I sold the last one to a person who laid down on the floor in a fetal position and cried..That was the one I was going to rebuild my sharpener with. The wheel has been in since about 91 and looks a bit beat. I need to find one for myself.. But, many thanks to those who purchased the wheels. If you followed my suggestions, you are sharpening experts..If not, then I have been known to be wrong. Was wrong when I tried to sell products...Decided Carving needed excellent products at a low mark up, and instant telephone service. Sent samples of cutters out to try and buy. $125 tool, person vanishes from surface of the Earth.Wears cutters and screws totally off the tool, No darn good if basswood will do this...Next items to be listed here will be a $75 Foredom cutter that will outrun any kutzall made. With very little dust, actually sand sized grains from Oak, Apple, Aged Cherry. And, a bunch of ONE WAY kutzall type tips, mainly for soap stone alabaster, soft marble at $7.50 each plus postage..They look like wet particle board, don't cut wood that fast, faster in stone, but you will be old when they wear out,,Made in the UK as a possible new product. I decided not to sell, but use them, and, price is my price. Funky shaped tips... I'll bet these things cost $50 or more to prototype.. :D Cordially Nad

Any one who bought a hard felt wheel and didn't use it, I'll be HAPPY to buy it back..Mine is on crutches, the motor which is going to break into flames any time now for the last 20 years , is still going to do it.. Going to do shows and will really need well sharped tools.

If you are serious about getting another wheel, try turning one up out of 1" MDF. Been using this stuff for years and can't pick the difference between it and felt for performance except that MDF can be refaced if it becomes 'troughed' though use with gouges... felt can't. Oh yeah... its about one fifth the cost.

Zounds like a winner,However, I only turn corners, and sometimes I don't even do those well...With the MDF, you use what kind of cooling paste? Actually, the felt wheel has a few things going for it.. When you see a very fine line of melted paste at the cutting edge, you know the tool is sharp. Should there be skips in the line, you have edge problems. No line at all, wrong angle./ or the tool was not properly prepped for the honing. I use a paper wheel for flat items and very small( 1 /64") Vees and veiners.. So, with a light mounted to catch the view of the edge, I've sharpened , from out of the box, used. 91 tools from EBAY UK, in less than that many minutes and almost all were ready for me to use..This includes, the use of a linnisher, stone wheel, my mad Nad set up.....So, the bottom line is that I can take 20 tools, and by virtue of the mud on the cutting edge know if they are sharp, and if any edges are defective..Visually, prior to use...... Some small nicks make it past me on occasion..Am 99.99 percent, but not perfect you know.... Cordially Nad

I use Jackson Lea LC 3600 compound on an MDF wheel. Best (and cheapest) system I've ever found. Stuff also works great on leather strops. Please yourself about the felt. Having tried both I know which I prefer. However, sharpening is a bit like religion and politics... Everybody has their own opinions and are usually ready to fight to the death to defend them. Life's too short.

Religion and politics... The best way to sharpen tools is to have your students do it for you. To be perfectly frank with you, I've seen the letters MDF (moulded dead fish?), but don't either know what it is or have had any experience with it. At 72, I've got sharpening down to a science, fast, quick and dirty. Turn around, turn motor on, same with light, quick jab with cooling paste,..Push tool into felt, rotate while saying"screw it".Wipe off chisel, turn motor , and light off, resume carving. About that fast, unless cooling paste on edge is messed up, then something is wrong..Normally, don't even test the edge.. :) Cordially Nad

Just for your edification, MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard... but you may have another name for it over there. Sounds like you have it all worked out anyway.
