where are all the active carvers at?

Postby Orvin » Sat Jun 23, 2012 1:40 pm

Been reading the posts there does not seem to be a lot of up to date post was wondering if anyone had a cardinal pattern they coul or would like to email? have found a lot of books you can buy but nothing free you can download off the net, if I wrer going to use it more than once the cost of the books would be ok but this is a one time special project and I don't do the samr carving twice. Am a retired graphic artist so drawing a pattern would be fine but was hoping to get away from that :D you can message me at orvin2009@live.com

Have a great day

Hi Orvin,

If you have drawing ability, you are especially blessed! I can't draw to save my life, but I do have a close friend in Google! Google 'image' and put your subjet in... sort through the kazillion and six photos that come up and try to find two or three that give you the perspectives you are after (ie, front/side or front/top etc.). I then copy and paste these to Microsoft 'Publisher' which has tools to allow you to manipulate the photo size and angle so that you get them proportioned the same. Print and tape to a window so that you have light behind your printed photos. Trace these onto paper and then cut out the shapes and stick them on card or thin ply if you want a permanent pattern.

Until I learned this process I was alway tied to what other people developed. Now I can pretty much come up with a pattern for anything I want.

Hope it helps.

I use the same process as Whittling only I use a light box to trace the picture to make a pattern. Google cardinal, you should get several pictures to choose from.
As for where are all the carvers, Whittling and I have asked that for the past year and have not found a answer.

Thanks guy's that's a new slant on things I usually just look at a picture and draw it free hand but only the major detail some times they are not exact but have a huge book on birds that give the average length, height and width so once I have the side prifile I can draw a block and then draw in the features the feather texture I usually burn in and do it randomally. but I may give your tenique a try to see if it will speed things up some. :D

Orvin take a look at the count of how many people have viewed a topic compared to how many respond. There is a lot of people looking just not responding. I stop by this forum everyday and most days it takes me less than a minute to see what is going on. I than go to the other woodcarving forum and most days it takes me at least a half hour to read the new post. This is a great magazine I do not understand why there is such a lack of interest.
