More beginner questions...

I am a beginner to the world of carving; but an advanced woodworker. I'm preparing to take a class in building period furniture--specifically an 18th century secretary. This class is in October 2006. So I’ve got some time to prepare myself for the carving this project will require. Prior to taking this class I'm going to take several carving classes. The first of these is a class on carving a shell with convex and concave rays. I would like to learn as much as I can before the shell class about tools, sharpening, and if possible some of the techniques I’ll be using. Can anyone recommend some good books, videos, or online tutorials?

Hi stu Here is another site
www.woodcarver.com/sharpening.htmStu there are many carvers here on this fourm that will give you answers to any questions you have. In the Carving magazine there are advertisments for many carving aids. If you are a wood worker you have some knowledge of sharpening, The one thing that I found different, is sharpening gouges and v tools. Get your self a good leather strop and some good compound for it. and keep your tools sharp. When you get your carving tools, find the angle of the bevel and do try to keep that angle when sharpening. When thay are sharp keep them honed with each use and they will stay sharp. Good luck on the carving school.
