Once In A Blue Moon

Postby Whittling on Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:11 am

I've been carving golf balls for quite a while now. I reckon I've done just about every expression I can think of. However, this afternoon things were a bit slow at the Craft Fair in which I was exhibiting, so I thought I'd add something different to my golf ball range. I carved this guy while I was sitting there waiting for customers (sigh) :(

Anyway, I call this one "Once In A Blue Moon"

Hope you like it... :D

Chris:

Perhaps you could do something with FACES carved in golf balls. I've long held that the humble golf ball offers a perfect medium for practicing human expression. The human face is a wonderfully complex and varied thing and we are hard-wired from birth to read very subtle changes in its componentry. It is said that some 90% of all communication is non-verbal and facial expression plays a big part here.

Here are a few examples of 'expression exercises' using ordinary golf balls with half the cover removed. The faces are then carved into the material that is already inside the ball. As far as I know there is no way of know what colour you will be dealing with until you have the cover off.

I've done a couple of simple WIP's for various forum on this topic, but never for the print media. I have most of the photos neccessary already on file.
I'd be interested in hearing from you if you think this might be of interest to your readers.

Hi ... love them. But we just did a story on Dale Kirkpatrick's caricature golf ball faces in issue #29 (last issue).

Good idea .... love the detail!
