Chris, Issue #21 has arrived and here'e my review. Advertizing ratio to other content about 25%, which is fine, especially since the advertizing subject is focused on carving. The "how to" stories are well supported with ample high quality photos. Not all "how to" features have as many photos as CARVING magazine has. If my count is correct, there are 8 "how to" articles. This is great. Also the ability levels of the "how to" articles seems to be well within most carvers abilities. This is good. Profiles are terrific. There's just a lot to like about this issue.

My Carving Magazine just arrived today also.....Just glanced at it while doing lunch today. It looks fantastic, of course the articles by Ivan are always worth opening any magazine for. (I think that sounds like BAD english)
Glad your magazine has better english than I am putting forth here. I am looking forward to digging into it.

Great job Chris...

Hey CW..........

Great issue. Just got it today and have only glanced through it. Will give it a good look this evening and tomorrow.

I am, by choice a caricature carver. However I am really intrigued by the hummingbird feeder and can't wait to give that thing a try.

I also liked the photo booth & drawing article. Just purchased a photo booth from Wally world. Will keep it and if needed build the larger version later.

I also like the carver profile.

Chris, you are doing a great job with the magazine.
God Bless You,
Terry

Terry,

Thanks for the comments.

Carvers have stressed that they love the fact that we focus on Techniques .... so I was very happy to sign up an artist to do a series of drawing articles. Haven't really seen this subject covered with any depth in a carving magazine.

We have tried to give short and simple projects as well as some in-depth ones .... there are people that like both types.

We are also looking for new artists/columnists as well as our regulars. If anyone has something to share please contact me ....

Let me know any other comments you may have ... also helpful are the constructive comments .... I really didn't think XX fit in, I didn't understand X or XX was poorly done.

I would also gladly accept private e-mails so your comments can stay confidential if you like ....

Thanks again,

Hey Chris -

Just got mine this afternoon. So far on quick inspection I am excited to read the in depth article about Rick, the Hummingbird feeder, the sharpening article, and I just got through looking at Jerry Mifflin's web site based on the recommendation from you On the Web section (or whatever is called). His work looks AMAZING!!

I'll post more on my favorites after I read it thoroughly on my commute tomorrow. Looks like a winner.

As an aside - one topic I'd really like to see addressed (and its a difficult one), is the topic of finances for professional carvers. How they price, do they focus on a niche or carve a large variety, if they are FT or PT and if FT how did they make that transition? How do they get health insurance? etc. i.e. The "business" side of pro carving. Not that I'll ever be a pro - but I am always curious, and hope to have a side "business" selling carvings one day.

Cheers!

Thanks Chuck!

I welcome your comments.

One note ... our staff expert Joe Dillett wrote a few articles in past issues about the business side of carving ... however you did bring up a few more issues that would make an excellent article ...

I will forward your suggestions ...

Thanks much!
