Hugh...do you have those prepaid priority, one price anywhere postal boxes in Canada? if so, I would like to get a box full and try it, never carved any butternut. Dave (the boxes are about2 in high, maybe 8-10inches wide and probably 12 in long....guesses tho lol)

Dave, I can ship UPS from the United States, or from the US post office. Let me know what sizes you would like, and I can get you the most reasonable rates. No handling or anything like that, only the actual postage. I have found the priority boxes expensive. And have mailed large boxes USPS, and had them delivered in three days, at a minimal charge. I'll ship to you, what you want, and put an invoice in the box for the wood, and you can take the postage amount from the post office sticker.

OK, not good at figuring board feet...I have one nice chunk of butternut but hesitate to mess it up, would like some smaller pieces to carve and get a feel for the wood, 2x2, 3x3 actually anything, just a small box full would be great ..........Dave

I've always had a hard time figuring it out as well. Seems the number I come up with is never the same as what it really is. Go figure.

However, I found this link here. Poke in your numbers, and it gives you an answer.

board feet

Postby Hugh » Sun Feb 12, 2006 1:50 pm

To start figuring bd ft, every thing in inches.
1 bd ft, 1"x12"x12". = 144"
If you have a pc 2"x3"x40" multilply it as it is written, 2x3x40= 240.
divide the 240 by 144, and that will give you bd feet. My reason for selling my wood that way, is because I bought it that way.
My first sale was to a retired building contractor. I thought there, this fella will know how to figure bd feet, well we ended up calling the local lumber yard. The man at the lumber yard had to go and look it up. So I called my sister, she is married to a carpenter, and I know she cyphers it out for him. She filled me in, now I'm an expert. But give me a couple days after the butternut is all gone, and I'll have to call my sister again. Cheers

butternut

Well the butternut is all gone, but I do remember how to figure bd ft. Grin. It is beautifully grained wood, and is very nice to work with a knife. Not sure, but possibly its named for the large walnut size nuts, that is produced by this tree.
