Holding small items

Postby hi ho sliver » Sat Jan 27, 2007 8:55 am

I put this on another form, good tip, might as well put it here, when you are carving very small items and it cramps your hands and you are trying not to cut your fingers.....cut the head off a drywall screw, drill a hole in a piece of dowel and insert the cut end of the screw into the dowel with some glue....works great for holding those little carvings! :D

Works for me!

Another way is to carve the small item while it is still part of larger stock. Finish the carving, then cut it free. Much easier on the hands.

I think the very best tip for carving very small items is MINE..........
simply grow very small hands. I have tiny hands and have no problem holding wee items .

any minute Dave will be buy to say something about my small brain ~sigh[/b]
I sign every carving with "Phil. 4:13"

Nancy,

At 42, I don't think I can grow new hands but maybe I could carve mine down a little bit. I don't think my wife would approve though. She usually squashes my most creative ideas! :D

For carving golf balls you can get a gadget that picks them up in the golf supply section. It looks like a suction cup.

Mount the suction cup on a dowell and hold it or clamp it in your vise.
