Question for experienced pyros

Postby mikeg » Fri Feb 09, 2007 9:48 am

I'd like to use a pyro machine to enhance my carvings, like Lynn and Nancy have done in their tutorials. I'd also proabably use it to sign the carvings as someone else suggested.

I'm curious what folks have and would they recommend their unit for what I'm looking for. I don't foresee getting into full blown pyography.

thanks,
mikeg

I like my razortip.....after some research ended up getting from Dennis Moor ...the price was comparable but the big part was some of the burners tips are outrageous in price! I bought a set of 6 from Dennis at the time was 18.00...razortip is good about fixing, replacing anything that needs done. I use mine like you are going to, I am not a burner per se, have done a couple of things, just not my thing, I prefer to use it as another tool on the carvings. Dave

I can't' imagine getting into full blown pyro either but I'm farther from imagining carving a Santa without a burner. :? How's that for confusing?

I sure could not carve a beard without my burner. I'm completely sold on my Colwood but I've never even tried anything else. I buy my handpieces and tips directly from Colwood and never have a problem.

I do sign every carving with my burner like this photo

I sign every carving with "Phil. 4:13"

Mikeq, I use the colwood detailer and I order my pens from Sugarpine Woodcarving Supplies. The pens feel like a pencil in your hand and I prefer them over the colwood burning pens. I still have the original colwood I bought 27yrs ago when I first started carving. So I guess you could say I'm sold on colwood. I think for someone starting out the colwood cub is a good deal. It's compact and has everything you need to do great burning. You have to experiment with the tips to find the ones that suit you and your style the best. Anyway, that's my opinion.

Hey Mike,

Great question! There is a pyrography section in this forum (towards the bottom of the list), and Nedra Denison wrote a nice description of her experience with woodburners. It's very detailed - I learned a lot.

Nancy - I love the way you sign your carvings! :-)
