You know, one of the best things I have ever done was start carving! I have always been involved in artwork of some sort and have oil painted for about 40 years....but carving has caused me to join several forums and I have met some of the nicest, must say, finest people ever! I think that is worth bragging about, we hear so much bad nowadays, it is a relief and a real pleasure to talk to carvers!! Thank You one and all!

Bragging is something that I love to do and I agree with you.
I was convinced that I had no artistic talent at all until I started carving.
Working with other carvers in the club and meeting people who carve is an expearience worth bragging about.

I found since I started carving, was the amont of information out there to help me learn this art. Along with the people willing to help has been icrediable. And these forms are great when one is looking for a quick answer to a problem. Other then the time spent infront of the monitor instead of a block of wood!

Well I'll add my two cents worth. I love carving, food for the soul. Also started with the computer a couple years ago, and have found the forums a great place to meet people, and gain information that just wouldn't be available to me. Hey Dave great posting, you said it all. Thanks.

I must concur....carving has been with me most of my life, in one form or another. The past six years of my life have been a real trial for me and I attribute my carving to keeping me sane. It has been the one constant in my life and I thank God every day that I'm still able to manage it. It doesn't ask for anything in return, gives fantastic satisfaction and gratification, is wonderful therapy and you meet the nicest folks involved in it. Friendly, helpful and encouraging.

It's a wonderful thing, to take a little wood, a sharp knife and a little time and patience, and produce something you can be proud of. Passing along those skills to a student, young or old, is very satisfying too.

Thanks for starting this topic. I have to say that woodcarvers share their information and resources generously every place I’ve gone, including the Internet. Woodcarvers are a special breed of people who love their art, love their fellow artists and loves promoting their form of art to help other get started.

There are many areas and events where seminars are offered free. One of this is the Evart Roundup in Evart Michigan June 16th through the 19th. About the only cost is a few dollars for a block of wood. Typically 500 carvers come and attend a bunch of seminars (I’m guessing about 40 seminars or more).

There is also the same type of event in Faribault Minnesota, called the Woodcarver’s Festival, the weekend of August 21 and 22. Lots of demonstrations and seminars. This also promises to be a real learning experience for free or just a few dollars for a block of wood.

I also have the GOW (Gathering Of Woodcarvers) here at my shop, The Carving Shop, in Somonauk Illinois, September 21 through the 25, There will be about 9 instructors holding about 20 seminars, also for free or a few dollars for the block of wood. About 40 carvers attend camping at my shop or staying in the Super 8.

These are just the ones I’ll be teaching at. There are many more like this around this country and Canada. The friendship and education are very valuable and well worth the effort to go.

I envy those of you that are close to such activities! Unfortunately there are none close to us here in the desert! I went to a couple of carving shows in colorado before moving here and loved them, they are great! Also entering mail-in entries is next best, except not a lot of shows accept them and you have to worry about our illustrious "postal" service destroying your work oh well, off topic, I envy those of you that are close to such activities! LOL

i love to carve to .i wouldnt no what to do with myself if i couldnt do it anymore.i have carved since i was 7 or 8 started out with a cub car and went on from there.i had a couple of periods were i took a couple of years off and didnt carve{usally because of work but i always came back.its like drugs its very addictive
