Beginner's Carving Project

Postby Rick-in-Seattle » Tue Aug 21, 2007 5:48 pm

I was 12 when I started carving; I had no one to help or teach me.

Starting out with E.J. Tangerman's "Modern book of whittling and woodcarving"; I would cut the pictures out of the book and use them for my patterns.

I still have that book, although it looks like swiss cheese.

That is why I have such a desire to help new carvers, we have to save the carving books!

Seriously, I would like to start a beginner's project and involve new carvers on this message board.

Let me know if there is any interest in doing a project. Thanks, Rick

well - here I go again. I'm simply bumping Rick's offer because I think it belongs on top.

I wish I knew how to move all my stuff to a different forum :(

Hi Floyd -- I'm going to email your message to Rick-in-Seattle to make certain he sees it quickly. He's a great guy.

I would be interested as well. I am a new carver with only 2 projects under my belts and appreciate those that are willing to help us newbies. It doesn't seem like there is a lot of activity unfortunately on this board, but if Rick is game I am. Maybe some day I can carve a hobo like Rick does. Now those are nice!

Although I am busier than a "one legged man in a butt kicking contest", if we get three more carvers to sign on, I will do it.

I'm in!

I'd love to get in on this! The thought of not just "winging it" just floors me, as I haven't been able to find a local carving mentor!

You folks are in for a lot of fun. Waiting anxiously by the mailbox each day when you're next... :D

A suggestion: Take a photo of the piece after you finish carving your part, and then email the photo to Rick only - don't let anyone else see the progress. Then, when it's all over, he can show us the progress...
